Vanaprastham

Staying with my cousin , i have tough time to bargain the hard disk I have, eventually ending up watching the movie i m talking here and truest sense I can rate this movie as one of my best watch ever. This is a movie that can challenge every entry in every film meet and yeah all time.

Set in the 1950's, Vanaprastham divulges certain experiences of a Kathakali artiste who faces an identity crisis in mid-life. The portrayal of a man’s inside world has been clearly depicted. Shaji uses the fascinating world of Kathakali, the classical art form of Kerala to present the theme.

The actor I respect Mr.Lal portrays the character who his life has attained the vanaprastha the age of retirement. The character has a soulful depiction of aspiration , self esteem , love to the art , ethical eroticism and most of all man living inside.

In Indian Philosophy, 'Vanaprastham' is the third of the four ashramas or stages in a man's life - Brahmacharya or bachelorhood, Grihastha or married life, Vanaprastha or retirement to the forest and Sanyasa or renunciation of all wordly interests.

Vanaprastham is an Indo-French collaboration, produced by Pierre Assouline and actor Mohanlal's Pranavam Arts. Cinematography is by Renato Berta and Santhosh Sivan and dialogue by Raghunath Paleri. Zakir Hussain, the renowned tabla artiste has composed the music and Beuno Thariel of France, the sound effects.
I certainly can bet on the purity of film making. This is a movie I would say as what should be called a movie that can challenge the parallel movie makers . It is a traditional Indian depiction which is land of Natya Shastras. With Cinema being new generation product I would say that this is what one should say a Cinema and it is what a dictionary for film making. It is clearly an Indian movie in the traditional sense of the word. It has the depth, the pace, and combines traditional Indian culture with Kathakali and deep human drama. Kathakali is a type of dance/stage drama, which comes from the Southern state of Kerala, and is expressed through the subtle performance of its actors, as a way to articulate emotions, by small movements of the face and body. It is based on centuries old Sanskrit plays, which incorporate sacred texts like the Mahabharata. The film is centered on a Master of Kathakali, Kunhikuttan, who as a fatherless child of a poor servant girl, began to learn the art as a way of feeding his family. We later understand, that one of the reasons for Kunhikuttan’ s constant emotional suffering, and thus, the mastering of his art, is the lack of a father figure. His art is so powerful, that a young woman falls in love with one of the characters he portrays, and bears his child. But reality is not a play, and she refuses Kunhikuttan to see his son, whom she considers is the son of the actual character Kunhikuttan portrays. The film is before anything else, a deep meditation on fiction and reality, and illustrates the need for certain classes to combine the two. In fact, as much as the art of Kathakali is subtle, the reality is crude and brutal. In actuality, Kunhikuttan’ s unknown father is the lord of the domain in which he lives; his mother's master. The young woman who bears Kunhikuttan’ s child, is a princess living in delusion, impassioned by mythological characters. All are heavy subjects to deal with, which will give everyone who sees this film, a lot to think about. The talent of the director comes across in his subtle bringing to light of all of these intricate emotions. Of course for a Western audience most likely ignorant of the subtleties of Kathakali and unaccustomed to the Indian Cinema, the director's subtlety will be of no help. A fascinating reflection on art and reality. "Vanaprastham" is a rhyme with elusiveness.

An institutionalized gogol...

In 2007 , Gogol Joined the software industry, an industry in India which is as pious as scared earth , Yeah maybe that’s what people think. All he took was his Rucksack filled with what he could usually wear for a week , a piece of diary , yeah a piece of diary which was torn enough to be eaten easily by the smelling rat , but which was his precious wealth more than the Titan he had in his wrist , the costliest thing he possessed till date, handful of money , a debit card of his brother , the white papers printed black which said that he was a Mechanical Engineer by Graduation and set of other documents. He moved to the city which he had lived for pleasant number of years to join the then second ranked company.

Software Industry as we say , is nothing but institution and we have all been institutionalized. First when people join or rather people are about to join , the smell in this shit hole murmurs around your nose for the best part of time you have in the day. This industry is funny. First you Love them, then you get used to them , then the system uses you. After long enough, you get so you depend on them. That's "institutionalized.” Software industry is where we want to have our life and that’s the same we give up … the Life.

Gogol’s Life was just as to get used to the society of what he has chosen. To earn his daily living he had decided to give up what he wanted to be, that of being something in the world, that of doing something in the world that can make him happy living at heart, that of not sacrificing his life for what we call to get institutionalized. It’s really pity that people choose to live in this industry to make a life which hasn’t been possible at least for Gogol without sacrificing the smallest of thing he could wish , an happy sleep. For all we live is to have a satisfied night thinking about what we have done for the day.

Half a decade passed by , Gogol’s life has never changed just for a change of the name of the Institution. Gogol still sleeps lazy nights disturbed of thoughts that makes him curse himself for what he had decided that day and for what he is in a position that not allows to jump the four walls of this prison to the outer world away from being institutionalized, into the world where he can think of himself and his ambitions that can give him a peaceful sleep in the night with what he has done in the day.

After five years of being institutionalized do you feel rehabilitated ?

Rehabilitated ? well now , let’s see . You know . I don’t have any idea of that word means.

Well are you satisfied being in this industry and wish to live in this institution or in the similar institutions like this for rest of your career ?

I know what it means . To me this world which you are talking about is a make-up world. It’s a politician’s society, a place where there isn’t any scope of dream and ambition, there is no place here for what we call , reward and recognition, people like you wearing a suit and a tie having a job working on an excel sheet day in and day out , talking over the voip like a pig’s yawn … what you want to know ?

Am I happy being in this institution ? Am I ready to serve this institution free from all problems which I take up? There isn’t a single day I haven’t regretted to what I have done, by joining , by being institutionalized , shaking the whacking tail like of a dog on the command of his master.

Not even a single night passes by without the regret of why did I took the train to the city of spirit and hope, why I accepted the self-imposed punishment of living a life away from one’s dream… not even a single day passes by…

I look back as what I was half a decade ago. Not even hundred bugs in my wallet, roaming around mount road shouldering a bag full of a novel , a camera a paper a pen thinking that one day this road might lead to Kodambakkam(area in chennai which hosts Kollywood), the place of desire and ecstasy, a place only dreamers and that those of its achievers can go.

I look back the days I was happy having a meal per day though satisfied in order to save time and money for a shoot , for a travel or for a movie or for a meet or just to walk around the marina .

I look back and curse myself that I have missed everything being in this industry which I thought can make my dream come true, rather what happened was different. I have been more institutionalized. The hand which ought to be writing the screenplay started hitting at the fiber board transforming into something meaningful for the client and for self it is just nothing but getting institutionalized.

Yeah when I look back , I feel myself spending a daily picnic in a rats hole with only the rats enjoying the party. I got to live with that dream , that distant dream that can only be dreamt of.

And for your question , I really don’t give a damn.

Life is all about pressure and time , That’s all it takes really… pressure and time..

With all his dreams , thanks to the society Gogol lives in , he gets life time sentence to be institutionalized. Final Verdict : DETAINED for rest of life in this rats hole.

To Be Continued ... Gogol Never Dies..

Ek Dewana Tha : review

When a fellow who has watched Vinnaithandi varuvaya a way over hundred times , watches this remake in Hindi starring Prateik Babbar and Amy Jackson directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon Himself with music recreated by ARR and Javed Akthar Joining the crew of which camera was handled by MS Prabhu and Cuts by Anthony, What is in stake for him? Will he be writing a review as a positive note ? Will he ever like the magic created in Tamil, remade in Hindi ?

What made me to watch the Film ?
Though crossing century of watching Tamil version , with certainty that I won’t like the Hindi Version , only thing made me to watch the Hindi version is just a wild stupidity to know the inevitable.

Before reviewing the Hindi version I would like to emphasis on why I liked the Tamil version.

Though loosely based on 500 days of Summer which I watched only after watching the Tamil version , I was lured in it’s simplicity , toughness in technical extravaganza for a simple love story and it’s art of storytelling with Unprecedentedly classic music by ARR and Matured Never seen like this Simbu and Trisha.

With story revolving around a couple who are in love , their confused relationship , typical nature of Trisha’s character dwindling between love and family etc , one can visualize this story is of themselves.

People are there who argue this movie as a crap but if you asked me the way in which this Tamil version has been posturized each and everyone will salute the Gautham way of film making.

The characterization of Character played by STR (Simbhu) was so appealing. The chemistry between the lead pair is classic. Cinematography showed the Gods Own Country  and God’s Second Home (Chennai) [Selfishness of writer to call his hometown should be enjoyed] as a visual treat should be applauded. Back Ground Music as always by ARR is another leading actor played. Screenplay of GVM proved he was veteran and easily in the league of MANI. The power in which STR provides the punches in his emotional dialogues the one in Ode Café and the other near His house when they return after the movie and the romantic way of proposing in Backwaters of Allepey can be easily knowing and understanding there is a huge transformation of STR as an Actor.

Coming to Trisha , they way she carried herself throughout the movie , Chinmayees’ voice , her body language proved she is not just Hip Hop Actress. Particularly the scenes where she confronts STR. She becomes an angel when she wears and walks in sari. Always I have felt that every Ena Mena Dika wearing 6 yard cloth named sari shall not look gorgeous at least beautiful. The Act of carrying a sari by a women shows her beauty.

The symphony style of smooth editing by Anthony if I forget I would be a sinner. Costumes by Nalini Sri Ram adds value addition. Climax was another touch of truthness I feel in the Tamil version which I missed both in Telugu version and Hindi Version. Central Park scene can be hailed as Best acting by Simbu.

Ok Enough said bout VTV but my motive was to review Ek Dewana Tha !!!

All the positives I said about VTV is completely missed in Hindi Version. Though you may curse that one shouldn’t compare but should analyse on its own merits , I m helpless.

Pratiek Babbar was wrong choice as Amy Jackson. PB is not matured actor. He has no body language and no power in his acting which is very much essential for a character like this. From the first montage cut showing Amy in sari and the way this lady walks makes me laugh if not smile and adore.

GVM the Director has compromised a lot in this venture. Lyrics don’t match the music though when read has style of Akthar Saheb. Locations were all shot in India i.e. again a compromise. When the whole movie revolves around the Lead pair the casting of Lead pair has to be perfect. The leading lady has to know the language. How can you expect this Lady from Europe to speak Hindi if not Malayalam. I can understand the difficulty Chinmayee would have faced dubbing her. There is no chemistry at all between lead pair.

Only Good thing I liked in Ek Dewana tha is the magical touch of Kya Hai Mohabath Song by ARR which wasn’t there in Tamil version.

Over all EDT is a crap waste of Time. I came home after watching this movie to Watch VTV again and sleep.

I don’t know whether this is a review or sort of but I never wanted a director like GVM to make a half hearted try on this. It surely is. People better watch the tamil version with Sub titles , better watch 500 Days of summer than EDT.

Wikipedia : Box office The film had a very poor opening day at the box office with only 5-10% occupancy in movie theaters. It went on to gross just 60 lakh (US$132,000) nett on its first day. On Saturday, the film collected just 75 lakh (US$165,000) nett.

Mupozthudum Un Karpanigal (Imaginations of you Always)

Mupozthudum Un Karpanigal  (Imaginations of you Always)

Directed by Elred kumar the Fellow who was one of the producers in RS Infotainment which produced VTV took the captainship in directing this movie starring Atharva Ram Murali and Amala Paul. Music is by GV and Camera by Shakthi with cuts by Anthony Ruben.

The story is all about a disturbed Soul who hails from poor family supported only by his mother, becoming an IT professional and sudden demise of his mother leading to becoming a physcho when he sees comfort in the Leading lady.  The whole story is all about what is the cause of this fellows psychological tamper , who are the elements involved and how he is saved. What is the role of Amala paul and what relation does she have with this fellow and How she comforts the hero?

Pretty Confusing right ? The screenplay was.

With people taking the mantle of providing jerks in screenplay and twists and turns in event which a viewer wows at , this movie is a poor adaptation of this logic. A screenplay writer should be clear enough not to confuse the audience and leave loose threads in screenplay when he is playing with screenplay which was meant to give a jerk at each and every scene end, this is where people like Mani RGV are great (to name a few).

6 songs three in each half is never needed particularly picturization in  Las Vegas and New york is never needed , this kills the anxiety of knowing what’s next and when inevitable or stupidity comes one gets irritated.

Story can be said as an adaptation of Kanukul Nilavu acted by Vijay and Shalini (God knows which is real First Copy).

Technical speaking when screenplay is irritating you with stupid jerks , we laugh at scenes where one should say wow. To say , had the first half been crisp enough without unwanted songs and some tight shots (non draggy) and shortening of the flashback , something could have appreciated.

When in Latha (CEO of the IT Company, played by Amala Paul) is getting engaged in US , the Bride groom introduces his friends, that scene is enough to tell that they are real culprits. There was lot of confusion over is there a double action of Amala Paul , this thread was dragging-ly solved with raising audience temper feeling (shall we leave kind of screenplay).

Hero Atharva Ram Murali is certainly a promising actor with Bala directing him in his next movie one has to be. But I feel he has to improve in his emotions and he is doing all kind of Heroics Stunts which are either unnoticed or feeling as a mockery. Stunt to the fact of your body and don’t imagine. Greats like Vijay, simbu,Dhanush have started realizing the fact that stunts like Vijaykanth are no more acceptable in TC. Hence Ram in early part of your career don’t follow these guys.

I really liked Ram in Bana Kathadi. He is a promising fellow but again fall in right hands else you will be next Bharath in making.

Meenakshi who plays Ram’s mothers character has done splendid job. Our Own Judas (Yudam Sei) has played a cake walk role for him. Santhanam was he really there in the movie , I didn’t notice him.

Editing was so dramatic at places and there was lot of lag leading to poor screenplay.

Regarding Amala’s Looks , she was said to be girl next door but one has to teach her how to act in front of a camera without seeing the lens. Basic Step.

Music I forget and one has to forget !!! it doesn’t fit in for the movie anywhere except for the pathos in flashback!!! One more song in the party enacted upon the hero himself!!!

GV Downtrend starts with this film I feel!!!

Overall again, promising film but once into the movie , your legs will be shaking for a walk out. Main culprits being the unwanted songs and poor screenplay.

A must read of Steven King : Rita Hayworth and The Shawshank Redemption

When you name Steven King, He I really the king of writing. Inspiration for me to buy this Novella , collected in Different Seasons , Collection with three other Fine Novellas, was the movie of the Same Name, The Shawshank Redemption.

Writing is always better than Cinematic medium; this statement is again proved with this. Not All expressions and emotions have been captured in the motion picture.

Though I have watched the movie prior to reading this novella, I could create the production design in my head, which helped me to visualize the plot even better.

The plot is very humane, I presume. The narrative style from the Character ‘Red’ is fantabulous.

The emotions carried by the ‘King’, the agony of prison-ed  people, popular word, Institutionalized , has been carried exponentially beautiful. The words chosen in by the ‘King’ to describe the path of rehabilitation , A life inside those four walls of Prison, the system needs a thumbs up.

The plot when RED reaches for his final parole speaks up the story behind the bars.

Andy’s determination has been clearly exploited to define his power of dream to live.

I could write pages describing this novella which is just of hundred pages.

Read this, you will never regret, but you will add a sublime touch to your life post this read.

A must read of Steven King.

Life Beyond Care , Tension Beyond Love : Pls Understand

Everyone travels. Every family mate of your travels. People who work away from home travel for weekends, month ends, half yearly , yearly but they do travel. They travel with their family mates. Mother, father, siblings, better half , in laws , friends, relations whom you are confused with (confused in what relative term you need  to call) , enemies every one travel.

The question is , thanks to new age generation you are in where security is fine compared to ages thanks to technological advancements , (even then) you get tensed about the reach about of the person who travels. You sometimes have sleepless nights questioning inner self about the safety of the person who is in travel. Tell me people , did u ever in the hell of a world did sleep well when your closest of relative , friend is in travel. I doubt so.

Is the reason of we care so much relates to this trauma of living helpless nights unless we get a SMS stating I’m safe and reached? Particularly when weaker gender travels!!! Of late one thing I have decided , never ask your relatives unless accompanied by a man , to travel alone in the night.

Female associates here and everywhere , just for the sake of working in corporate world, please don’t boast of travelling alone in the night stating , “I KNOW WHAT I Am DOING !! DON’T TEACH ME LIKE KID”… you may stronger enough to face the challenge, but the fellow sitting on the bed @ midnight though after getting repeated SMS from the traveller that she is  safe , he tends not to go to sleep , for hell of his sake , please refrain from travelling in unsafe conditions without proper bookings reservations, proper intimations and communications, without support.

PS : We men will never feel safe and happy satisfied even when our beloved is travelling in chartered flight…

I Dislike abhor and despise

I Dislike abhor and despise the magnificence of this innocent world. The world of hatred starts at your tiny verdures that your poles crush. The shrubs aren’t far away to receive my revulsion thanks to your shoulders that skirmishes away. Enormousness of my abhorrence surges when I realize some flowers get the definitive sense of life, your touch by those tiny shiny digits, your fingers. I get angry on the silent breeze that touches your face. Drops of rains aren’t far away making my insolvent heart to get depressed by checking your cheeks. The sporadic convulsions of pleasure on your mask makes me miserable. The earth that yawns the vital mass of life makes me grow livid on it as your shadow ornaments on it. The grins of light that passes through your eyes erodes me of tiny happiness that I possess and your glances makes my already hesitant unsteady step that moves forward to turn backward. All I hate are the people who deserve you and those you deserve and the people in all , I Dislike abhor and despise.

Don 2

Any Time Better than Ra One , This in any case you all might know before reading this review. Don 2 , basically riding on the Salim-Javed created plot and star power of SRK. Farhan Akthar’s previous venture in DON 1 is anytime better than this version.
Following are the positives of DON 1 which has not been carried out in second part which is well say negatives of DON 2.
The scope of SRK character was huge in DON 1 unlike now. The characterization and screenplay gave ample acting scopes to all the characters which are not the case now. The dialogues where natural and not artificial (at least in some cases) in DON 1.
The plot revolves around multiple places and has scope for chase and seat edge stuns which I missed in DON 2 (Particularly in second half where almost entire plot runs in a building).
Theme music has been maintained giving less scope for any new. When compared to Hollywood flicks running as sequels one might find newness in music apart from theme music. This I feel it’s a lag here.
DON 2 basically revolves around berlin and zurich based on a bank robbery part which is as similar to Bank Job and Mangatha.  A big negative here.
My logical sense differs to understand the logic behind a thief being left out for helping the COP.
Stuns are great , editing and cinematography was decent. PC acted well but her style and walk reminded us more of Angelina Jolie.[This line was said by ARUN. I give full Credits to Arun]] Her so called Romantic or ‘Feeling-wala’ scenes were stupid at least for I-am to say.
Apart from PC and SRK none , literally none had anything to play for. The Thrilling suspense of DON in DON 1 was missing here.
Cameo of a Superstar (atleast his Face) was inspiring and thrilling for me.
Lot of Continuity mistakes which should have overdone atleast while editing. This shows the movie was in hurry to be released. Couple of examples are scene where PC and SRK ‘s Close up shot and in a bomb sequence.
A movie shall run only for DON plot and SRK charisma , nothing else in a much hyped movie.
I ll Not give more than 2.5 out of 5.
The rating and interest can go way beyond 4 and above only if you are a SRK Fanatic.
PS:P had nice time watching the movie with Sound and ARUN

Tsunami : the Day it was

After 7 years....

Tsunami, I have never heard about this till that date. May be its synonym for what is called death. I may not be the most affected person by this but I had seen people suffering by this phenomenon. The 26th of December the day life in coastal Tamilnadu can be considered as forgettable. Two days before  I came for writing an exam to city considering my residence as sub urban I decided to stay in my friends place for the Christmas weekend. It was a nice festivity season with food fun and movies was the itinerary. Saturday, the Christmas , we enjoyed roaming around the city and having fun. Thanks to ignoring of my parents repeated calls I stayed back in my friends place for celebrating Sunday . College days , those where which meant to be fun with friends and I enjoyed every penny of those. Post late night movie the day before I with my friends overslept cancelling our plans to go to Santhome Basallica early in the morning. With palpable interest in this shrine for this uniqueness and beauty I asked all my friends to get up and dragged them. It was 7 in the morning we started to marina for early morning walk on Sunday where we can arguably see people entangled in their lives and which was sheer enjoyment for us. Thanks to delay in having early morning chai in the standard tea shop we have, we crossed the D –time god has limited on us, the coastal living junta of Tamilnadu. Suddenly we heard a huge sound, dropping our tea glasses we rushed  to the Kamaraj Salai, The Marina. Rest is what you all call Tsunami.
I was destined to be there kissing the shore with my hands wide open praying the Goddess of Ocean. The practice I even do now. I like to make the waves chase my legs the practice we all do. I like to ask for a wish or two with the dangerous yet sacred waves I even do now.
Had I done that day, I wouldn’t be here.
This is natural disaster, people say.  I say, this is disaster which not only affects human lives but the mental agony of those chanced to live / escape.
For me Chennai and marina are synonym as the word beauty and aura are. Every time post that day I go to marina to pray the goddess of beauty the marina, I thank her and ask her blessings.
I was not at all affected by this, the agony of those who spared their known is much worrisome. But , I did happened to see the aftereffects of Marina with shear fierceness. I just prayed, no one can withstand her fierceness and asked her to remain calm fir her lifetime.
Every day when I pass by her, I shed a tear, for those who lost and for those who have similar feelings like me.
