Chennai India: Broken Bridge

This is a picture taken from the broken bridge in adyar, it earlier would connect the adyar with foreshore estate, across the adyar river. This particular bridge has featured in many Tamil movies like Vaali and Ayutha Ezhathu, the ones I’ve noticed the bridge, there are innumerable movies which have been shot on the bridge. During a season of heavy rains, a portion of the bridge was washed away, what stands today ends abruptly at the in the middle of the adyar river. This is one place in Chennai which I enjoy visiting, and frequently visit. Walking up the bridge, sitting at the edge, where it ends abruptly over the Adyar River, enjoying the cool breeze, while standing at the edge, or sitting along the beach just looking into the waves while sitting on the beach sand. Something interesting about the Broken bridge.
The Broken bridge spanning across the Adyar river in Chennai, for long a haunt will finally be mended in the Sydney style. The Government of Tamil Nadu has approved the proposal to replace the Broken pillars and spans of the Bridge. The 1966 built bridge was washed away in a flood in 1977. And now the bridge will be part of the proposed elevated corridor running along the coast from the Lighthouse to Kottivakkam on the East Coast Road. The architecture of the bridge will be based on the design of the Sydney Harbor Bridge, with two reinforced cement concrete pylons on both ends of the bridge and a steel arch running across which would amount to about Rs 32 crores ,says an official. This may take some time to take effect due to its budget and this may also be replaced with any other styles depending on an affordable budget. So, lets wait to see how the Broken bridge running across the Adyar river in Chennai is going to be replaced.

Me

If you think Chennai is a peaceful and safe city at night, you are dreaming. Wake up! you have not seen the night life in this city. The Broken bridge: Do not go to this place after say, 11 at night. It’s a kilometer and half away from Besant Nagar beach, Broken bridge is a famous film shooting spot during day-time. But after the sun disappears this place will become more spookier. You will have to go through the Ollcot Kuppum to reach this place. You might see some romantic couples here in the early evening and some group of youngsters chatting but as it grows darker the place will become absolutely deserted, there will be absolutely no lights, just a bridge that extends into the middle of the backwaters and ends abruptly. The only people you could depend on for help in case of any problem are the fishermen from the Ollcot Kuppum. But chances are that you will never ever get them to hear you when you need help. The local fishermen tell that they hear the sound of a women screaming at night, which is believed to be the ghost of a women who was murdered here some years back. So if you think, you have the nerve to go for the venture. No problem! you can well go!! But I advise you to carry your ID. Will surely help police identify any bodies recovered from the spot next morning.
Let all be fine, for us this place is as sacred, as for the night out we do daily, this is must go place. The breezy beach with foreshore view , I enjoy this place. For me this must be place more than Elliot’s Beach. “Sand bars forming tiny islets. Trees of the Theosophical Society seen at a distance. The landscape has a dreamlike quality. It is like a no man’s land. It’s deliciously deserted.”

Broken Bridge

It’s deserted, unsafe and in a state of total disrepair. But the Broken Bridge in Besant Nagar, which runs over the tidal mouth of the Adyar river, is a visual treat. A Google search on the bridge throws up a chunky volume of work by shutterbug s. And it’s frequently featured as a backdrop in films.
Its desertedness is part of its charm — and also the reason why most of those who are aware of it, keep away. “Cut off and sequestered, the area is believed to be the stomping ground of anti-social elements. It has been in the news for the wrong reasons and is considered unsafe,” “Its landscape has interesting ups and downs and lends itself to off-roading, but we avoid the place fearing trouble.”
