Indian Writing

Indian English literature is an endeavour of showcasing the rare charms of Native writing in English. From being an inquisitive national explosion, Indian English has become a new form of Indian culture, and voice in which India speaks. While Indian authors have been making momentous contributions to world literature since the pre-Independence era, the past few years have seen a massive boom of Indian English writing in the international market. Not only are the works of Indian authors writing in English soaring on the best-seller list, they are also receiving a great deal of critical acclaim. Starting from Mulk Raj Anand, Vikram Chandra, Anita Desai, Kiran Desai, Arundhati Roy, Gita Mehta, Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni, Raj Kamal Jha, Jhumpa Lahiri, Bharti Kirchner, Khushwant Singh, Vijay Singh, Tarun Tejpal, Amit Chaudhuri, Amitav Ghosh, Vikas Swarup, Rohinton Mistry, Suketu Mehta, Kiran Nagarkar, Dr Birbal Jha and C R Krishnan.… the parade of fine Indian writers is long and lengthening.

R.K. Narayan is a writer who contributed over many decades and who continued to write till his death recently. He was discovered by Graham Greene in the sense that the latter helped him find a publisher in England. Graham Greene and Narayan remained close friends till the end. Similar to Thomas Hardy’s Wessex, Narayan created the fictitious town of Malgudi where he set his novels. Some criticise Narayan for the parochial, detached and closed world that he created in the face of the changing conditions in India at the times in which the stories are set. Others, such as Graham Greene, however, feel that through Malgudi they could vividly understand the Indian experience. Narayan’s evocation of small town life and its experiences through the eyes of the endearing child protagonist Swaminathan in Swami and Friends is a good sample of his writing style. Simultaneous with Narayan’s pastoral idylls, a very different writer, Mulk Raj Anand, was similarly gaining recognition for his writing set in rural India; but his stories were harsher, and engaged, sometimes brutally, with divisions of caste, class and religion.

Certainly, Indo-Nostalgic writings have much overlap with post-colonial literature but are generally not about ‘heavy’ topics such as cultural identity, conflicted identities, multilingualism or rootlessness. The writings are often less self-conscious and more light-hearted, perhaps dealing with impressionistic memories of places, people, cuisines, Only-in-India situations, or simply vignettes of “the way things were”. Of late, a few Indo-nostalgic writers are beginning to show signs of “long-distance nationalism”, concomitant with the rise of nationalism within India against the backdrop of a booming economy.

One of the key issues raised in this context is the superiority/inferiority of INDIAN WRITING IN ENGLISH as opposed to the literary production in the various languages of India. Key polar concepts bandied in this context are superficial/authentic, imitative/creative, shallow/deep, critical/uncritical, elitist/parochial and so on.

Rushdie’s statement in his book – “the ironic proposition that India’s best writing since independence may have been done in the language of the departed imperialists is simply too much for some folks to bear” – created a lot of resentment among many writers, including writers in English. In his book, Amit Chaudhuri questions – “Can it be true that Indian writing, that endlessly rich, complex and problematic entity, is to be represented by a handful of writers who write in English, who live in England or America and whom one might have met at a party?”

Chaudhuri feels that after Rushdie, INDIAN WRITING IN ENGLISH started employing magical realism, bagginess, non-linear narrative and hybrid language to sustain themes seen as microcosms of India and supposedly reflecting Indian conditions. He contrasts this with the works of earlier writers such as Narayan where the use of English is pure, but the deciphering of meaning needs cultural familiarity. He also feels that Indianness is a theme constructed only in INDIAN WRITING IN ENGLISH and does not articulate itself in the vernacular literatures. He further adds “the post-colonial novel, becomes a trope for an ideal hybridity by which the West celebrates not so much Indianness, whatever that infinitely complex thing is, but its own historical quest, its reinterpretation of itself”.

Deep Thinking ... I breathe

“Think Deeply … Deep Thinking … Dream on, to I breathe…. Live on and hence I breathe”. Life is all about you think to dream and dream the past when you are done with the dream. Life is a game of chess where the fate always succeed winning the game and always makes you to think that you are always playing ahead of it, the fate , it winning the prime motive of playing with you. Life I define is an amalgamation of insignificant dots that you ought to cross to make it as a whole picture that you dream of and that you want to be dreamt of till ages behind and beyond your death. That’s Life.

I always walk long, succeeding as always I do forgetting the move I need to make and suddenly I find myself in a new arena. Innocence of this world shall trigger your dream to new heights if you just dream it of the way you want to. Life teaches you this umpteenth time and you seldom listen thereby realizing that life teaches you unless you are bang on. There is something ineffably poignant in the life that cures your thinking and vision and pushes you to the heights unless you desperately want to fall on gravity.

Insane us

Well fact is fact. Believe it or not. But the fact is different from once own view point. People change, their atmosphere changes, their views changes, and they tend to change for betterment or the worst being towards worse. I always say this world is as innocent but the people living in or not. Is this true? Perception changes, views change. People are not the same always.
Their attitude and behavior change according to the state they are in, Air, Water or the land. People tend to move towards these basic states based on the social status, their financial status and their emotional status. When I call this dumb world as innocent, and the people are not, it means a lot to me and for those who understand the real meaning of these mere words. The same person tends to avoid the interaction with the society, the very own which made him or her, he or she is now.

People forget past, people forget people, people forget the entire nuances which ought to be remembered throughout their life and beyond that, but people forget to forget the problems, issues, fights, misunderstanding and the times they are emotionally charged. When the world is too small to have your emotions intact, why you have this in first place, secondly why the hell people feel their atmosphere and circumstances is making them to live like that.

Hell with the word circumstances. For those who feel like this, I m to tell only a thing which has been pestering in me since ages, the fact of living the world and wining the same and be on top of it with those responsible for it. This is sensible and is the sensible thing. I don’t know whether people remember this or not or they act barbaric without knowing that they remember it, it is always painful and more painful than dead when you have something to share , your victory or grief and you don’t have anyone sides you. This is life, which means to me and most of living here as the reason to live happily with others. Following questions were raised by others to the author of this post which was tended to my experience of these circumstantial issues or not. Yes, I m not saint, hell with the god, I do have experienced it, in bitter way, that’s the reason I m here writing these lines which are just my emotions and nothing more than that. People travel lot of places; they travel distinctly without being true to themselves. Life is meant to be fathoming beyond once inner realization and shelving the blame on circumstances mere won’t solve the purpose of life.

Atheism and Theism

This is a topic which always haunts me in my sleep and I desperately want to conclude which has no conclusion. As defined, theism is in the broadest sense is the belief in at least one deity. In a more specific sense, theism refers to a particular doctrine concerning the nature of God and his relationship to the universe. Theism, in this specific sense, conceives of God as personal and active in the governance and organization of the world and the universe. The use of the word theism as indicating a particular doctrine of monotheism arose in the wake of the scientific revolution of the seventeenth century to contrast with the then emerging deism which contended that God — though transcendent and supreme — did not intervene in the natural world and could be known rationally but not via revelation. Atheism can be either the rejection of theism, or the position that deities do not exist. In the broadest sense, it is the absence of belief in the existence of deities. Atheism tends towards skepticism regarding supernatural claims, citing a lack of empirical evidence. Common rationales include the problem of evil, the argument from inconsistent revelations, and the argument from no belief. Other arguments for atheism range from the philosophical to the social to the historical. Although some atheists tend toward secular philosophies such as humanism, rationalism, and naturalism, there is no one ideology or set of behaviors to which all atheists adhere. Start Music. What are the factors does one need to consider when he discovers himself and differentiates between these two broader categories? What is the basic difference in following these two in today’s living generation? Does God really prevail in real? In what way? Strong atheist says there isn’t any god. Should I believe this? Weak atheist says I have not seen. Can I believe this? Does God have any structure shape and size? Can we see or can’t we? Does the sculptures books epics are just novels and art works? Do we infer any serious mythological understanding in this? Can’t we see God in human? Why people believe things they don’t see and unbelief on things they see?

While I was answering to these questions I came up with a story which I read in an article by Late CM of TN. Here it goes. The zamindar of the house was reading news paper sitting and relaxing him on a dancing chair. He was frustrated as his servant has not come for couple of days and put on uninitiated leave. Servant entered the hall and on frustration the zamindar asked where the hell he was for last couple of days? The servant replied in a submersible tone that he was away to pay respect to Lord Thillai Natraja, avatar of Lord Shiva presiding deity in famous temple Chidambaram. Zamindar asked how his trip was and did he paid his respect. The servant replied yes. Zamindar asked the servant to stand on one foot like the avatar of the deity. The servant performed this act and was not able to stand more than couple of minutes. The zamindar asked why you are slipping and asked him to stand like the god, the deity. Losing his strength the servant landed his foot and said, zamindar sahib the deity is made of stone and He was a human, hence it is impossible to stand like that. Sarcastically proving his point the zamindar asked the servant, to see the stone why did he travel to Chidambaram, we can see at back of house. Conclusion of this post and the story is as simple to prove a point when people can see god in adjacent hearts and soul and people can pay respect upon themselves as each soul is god what is the need of an external constitution to believe as a god. I was seriously moved by this article and find answered to all my queries. P.S. I m an atheist and a weak atheist who developed a habit of seeing God and so called super natural powers in nature and I worship fellow lives as those called god. Any medium of this post if it affects anyone here and everywhere is apologetic and request from my side to read and mean as it is written.

Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani

Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani has been the talk of the town ever since the release of its first teaser. Directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, APKGK has a fresh lead pair in Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif. It’s a comedy after a long time from the director of Andaz Apna Apna, reason enough to watch it, don’t you think? Not for me it is a remake of a cult film Roja Kootam with lots of money pour into it roping two stars of bollywood Ranbir and Katrina,

Ranbir became my favorite after his first film sawaariya where I like his cult comedy body language making me feel happy even if he goes on delivering nonstop dialogues. I like his body language identical to his dad and grand dad and no doubt he is from first family of Hindi cinema.

Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani is about Prem and Jenny and their love. Prem, a school dropout is a fun loving guy. Being the President of Happy Club that he runs along with his friends, his motto in life is uniting lovers and makes others happy. And in attempts to unite a love pair, he falls in love at first sight with Jenny. After a lot of misunderstandings Jenny and Prem become friends and in no time Prem falls helplessly in love.

APKGK is a let-down in terms of its inconsistent script and moves from being a good romantic tale to a senseless slapstick comedy. It starts off slow in the first 15 minutes, with sluggish pace and forced comedy but after Katrina’s entry the movie picks up. Post interval, logic goes for a toss with every frame filled with unnecessary extras. Upen’s love angle isn’t convincing and so is the sudden kidnapping of Jenny. Salman’s special appearance, Ranbir’s church prayer sequence where he talks to the lord in ‘butler’ (broken) English, his first day at his job to impress his girl, the dance partner scene, father-son encounters at home are some of the best moments that make APKGK a fun watch.

The movie does get a little absurd but has its moments with a light hearted appeal throughout. It works majorly because of its refreshing lead pair – Ranbir and Katrina, who amaze with great screen chemistry. Ranbir’s ‘No Confusion, No Demand’ steals the show. In a stellar act, the Kapoor lad expresses every bit so exceptionally that he makes you feel deeply for his character. Katrina Kaif looks gorgeous. With an infectious smile, limited talent and her accented Hindi, she impresses. Upen Patel is all body, no talent. From the side actors, Darshan does very well.

AS WE GO DOWN LIFE’S LONESOME HIGHWAYS

AS WE GO DOWN LIFE’S LONESOME HIGHWAYS

IT’S ALWAYS HARDEST THING TO DO

TO FIND A FRIEND OR TWO

THAT HELPING HAND

SOMEONE WHO FEELS

IF YOU FEEL YOU HAVE LOST YOUR WAY

YOU GOT SOMEONE THERE TO SAY I WILL SHOW YOU

THAT’S THE WAY…

Childhood friends till one’s lifetime are treasures which no one want to lose it. I m the same who just want to have nostalgia of the life we went through till date and particularly when we travel in difficult phase of a relationship. ’Langotiya Yaar’ meaning childhood friend is a word which I relate always to this person for me this fellow is what the world of friendship means. When I was available for all these years to wish him for his birthday falling the immediate day after birth of Chacha Nehru , this year I won’t be available to smell the sweet of love and affection which I received for all these years. Why? The answer is simple and obvious : quarrel. Leave apart all these, I will never shed negative thoughts in my mind of him and I want to share my divine friendship with a fellow whom I know from the day when India knows Sachin Tendulkar and I want to remember him until the world sheds its last breathe and even after that.

College days , official friends acquaintances fell short of what a real Childhood friend can give you and hope there won’t be any disparity on this. Life is sweet for those who have such and I personally know the real depth of friendship lies there. For say, there are days when we both have lived a life sans everything in life and enjoyed the life more than anyone. The day when I first saw this personality , in fact from the day when we walked hand in hand to our first day of schooling and till date when we live a corporate life working for multinationals, this fellow means a lot to me. Life is a game where we travel in different phases and we shall know when the same actor plays of all these roles and when we can really visualize the changes in phase, emotions and living style and the life teaches you that no matter what you be , no matter what the life’s intolerable phase you are passing , there is one who can be depended upon just to show the way you ought to travel. (Go through the lines above and continue reading) It’s always special to remember those funny days we lived , travelling the length and breadth of the country and living what the life is called a life and enjoying every moment one can presumably live with smile laugh and sanity. This is a life in life for me.

Defence quarters where I lived my livelihood till being here in Satyam is a place where one can see the real bunch of characters spanning regions languages and most important the bunch of friends one gets are next to real. I was lucky that he was with me for all these years while seeing the possibility of transfers is huge when being children of officers of this profession. Huge playgrounds, state of art indoor stadiums, amalgamation of twenty odd families and with nice friends I got this fellow a gem of all gems. Living in these atmosphere is altogether a different story and it speaks volumes of nativity we get though being miles apart the native we live in.
